January 09 Virtual Sketch Date

"Clemetine"
5 x 7"
pastel and colored pencil on Ampersand pastel board

Spent much of the day watching the innauguration with my young son reminding him that he was seeing history being made.

But I found time to finish this month's VSD (Virtual Sketch Date). As in my past VSD posts, I decided to try something a little different that the way I usually work. This month I did a pastel underpainting and finished with colored pencil on a tan-toned Ampersand pastel board.

Check out the other entries this month; many of them are wonderful. You can see many of the members' drawings on a Flickr page here.

  1. Amazing how I can almost see into the Clementine! Really neat work. I work with oil paint but enjoy looking at other artists' work. Thanks for posting this wonderful piece.

  2. I am commenting even before I go look at the other paintings or the reference. This is awesome -- the light quality is glowing. The rendering is exquisite. It explodes with light.

I have not tried pastes under color pencil as yet. Do you think they can be framed without glass as can the color pencil on patel board?

  3. I see you and Blue Bird Hill have been hanging out in the same places :-)

I really love the color in this, the dark blue contrasted with the bright orange...brilliant ;-)

  4. You did a fabulous job with this. My husband was looking over my shoulder and he said "Oh, WOW, that is really good!" then my son had to see it, so I turned the laptop towards him and he said "She is good! You had better really work hard to make yours as good." and my husband said "Yeah, take your time so that yours turns out that good." WAY TO RAISE THE BAR!

I really like how you cropped the image. The pastel undercoat with coloured pencil is brilliant. (Mine will be all coloured pencil).

Your work inspires me. It is so wonderful.

  21. Thank you ALL for your very kind comments! So nice.

Angela: I don't know if I can frame this w/o glass. Probably should seal with acrylic spray first. I'll try it and post about it.

Regina: I used Prismacolor Nupastels. Very friendly with my Prismacolor pencils.

  23. this looks very soft. Wonderful job with the colours :D

  24. Wow. That lighting is stunning and I adore its softness. Really beautiful.

Does the combination of Prismacolor Nupastels and Prismacolor pencils mean that you can layer either on either? I've been playing around with pencil over pastel this week and obviously if you've got waxy pencils then you can't go over them with pastel. I was trying to get round it with watercolour pencils, but I don't have many of those and especially not a decent green!

I'll bookmark your site and check back - such beautiful work!
